| The Camp Sherman
area is known as a birding portal.
Part of the Oregon Cascades Birding trail in located in this area
making
it possible for visitors to use this beautiful setting as a base camp
and
spend their days searching for the elusive white headed woodpecker as
well
as many other beautiful and diverse bird species. Birding trails are
self
guided auto tours that highlight selected sites for observing birds.
While
in the area, take some time to view the birds and other wildlife in
their
natural habitat. Not only is there an abundance of wildlife, but the
area
offers beautiful mountain views as well as seasonal carpets of
wildflowers
and rugged volcanic peaks.

| Metolius River Rising on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, the Metolius River flows north and eastward to Lake Billy Chinook which then joins up with the Deschutes River at Cove Palisades State Park. In 1988, the river was designated a national Wild and Scenic River. Fed by numerous springs, the river maintains a very nearly even flow throughout the year. The Metolius’ clear cold water is home to rainbow trout, Dolly Varden (bull trout),white fish, brown trout and Kokanee salmon. Fly fishers, from beginner to expert, enjoy the beauty and test of "the most challenging fly fishing stream in the Northwest." |

Wilderness Trails Trails in the Metolius area offer many scenic vistas. From charming alpine meadows and pristine lakes to old growth timber and carpets of wildflowers. Visitors to the area can choose from true wilderness trails to more relaxing hikes around Suttle Lake or along the Metolius River. |
Black Butte and the Metolius Basin The Metolius Basin is a unique setting of gentle streams, alpine like meadows, old growth forests, abundant wildlife, and mountain views. Located between the Cascade Crest to the west and Green Ridge to the east, the Basin's length is crossed by the clear waters of the Metolius River. |

Suttle
Lake Suttle Lake is located about 15 miles northwest of Sisters on Hwy 20 in the Deschutes National Forest just east of the Santiam summit. The lake was named for John Settle, a pioneer and one of the organizers and directors of the Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Military Wagon Road project in 1866. While on a hunting trip Settle found the lake, which now bears his name in a corrupted form. The lake has an
excellent
population of kokanee, brown trout, whitefish, and crayfish. |
Mount Washington Named after the first President of the United States, George Washington, Mount Washington is 7,795 feet high. Visitors must obtain a wilderness permit to enter the protected Mount Washington Wilderness. Trailheads are located at Big Lake, south of HooDoo ski resort. |

Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery This hatchery raises trout, kokanee, and Atlantic salmon. The hatchery is in a park-like setting, with display ponds, interpretive signs, and a viewing platform. There are abundant camping, hiking, and fishing opportunities nearby. Group tours are available with prior arrangements. Turn north from Hwy 20 and travel on Forest Rd #41 until you see the sign for the fish hatchery. |
Mount Jefferson The mountain, Oregon's second highest, was named by Lewis & Clark in 1805 for President Thomas Jefferson. One of the 13 major Cascade Mountains volcanos, Mt Jefferson is located souteast of Portland and northwest of Bend. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail crosses the mountain on it's western slope. Mt. Jefferson offers a true alpine technical climbing experience. Climbers gain as much as 7000 feet in elevation along some routes. |
